Mala Tempora Currunt is a display font based on the rotunda character, typical of printed editions between the 15th and 16th centuries. The font is based in particular on the Gótico Cervantes character (1928) of the Gans typography, but with some variations.
There are several stylistic features (ss01, ss02, ss03, ss04) to simulate particular behaviors.
In particular, the ss03 feature is used for the alternative letters r and d according to Meyer's rules (Die Buchstaben-Verbindungen der sogenannten gothischen Schrift, 1897): when d is followed by a letter convex to the left, it becomes rounded; when r is preceded by a shape convex to the right, it becomes rounded.
The ss04 feature instead tries to simulate Meyer's further rule, according to which when two convex letters meet (the first convex towards the right and the second convex towards the left), there is an overlap between the two letters; for optimal use, ss04 is used together with ss03.
Ideal for editorial design, branding with a historical edge, and elegant typographic compositions, Mala Tempora Currunt font bridges the gap between tradition and modernity, honoring the legacy of print’s golden age.
